Strathcona County RCMP advise of area detours during fire investigation on Wye Road and Sherwood Drive – Update 2

 

Strathcona County, Alta.— Strathcona County RCMP, along with the Strathcona County RCMP General Investigation Section, have continued to investigate this structure fire. The fire investigator completed the examination of the structure on April 24, 2021.

On April 24, 2021, Matthew Benjamin Flanagan (32) of no fixed address, was charged with:

  • Intentionally or recklessly cause damage by fire
  • Mischief over $5,000

Following a judicial hearing, Flanagan was remanded into custody to speak to bail in Sherwood Park Provincial Court on April 28, 2021.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be provided.

Strathcona County, Alta.— Strathcona County RCMP remain on scene of the structure fire at the shopping complex on Sherwood Drive and Wye Road and the investigation continues.

At approximately 6;30 a.m., traffic resumed in the areas of Wye Road and Sherwood Drive. Traffic in the area immediately adjacent to the structures impacted by the fire is still affected.

The fire investigator has been on scene; however, conditions have been unsafe and prevented entry into the structure for examination. Once an examination and investigation is completed, Strathcona County RCMP will receive an official report from the fire investigator.

Strathcona County RCMP’s investigation has resulted in the arrest of one individual at approximately 9:45 a.m. remains in custody. No further details are available at this time as this matter is still being actively investigated. No charges have been laid at this time.

Strathcona County RCMP advise of area detours during fire investigation on Wye Road and Sherwood Drive

 

Strathcona County, Alta.—On April 24, 2021, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Strathcona County RCMP received a 911 call of a fully engulfed structure fire at the Chopped Leaf located on Sherwood Drive in Strathcona County.

Strathcona County RCMP and fire services attended the scene of the incident. Strathcona County Fire Services efforts to contain the fire continue. As a result of this incident, the KFC, Little Caesar, K-Lee Boutique, Chopped Leaf, Dr. Bernstein Clinic, Great Clips have all been damaged in the fire. Some other adjacent structures may have also been affected by the fire; however, more will be known once the fire is extinguished.

Strathcona County RCMP have contained the scene of the fire for further examination by a fire investigator. The origin of the fire is unknown at this time.

As a result, the following areas in Strathcona County will have traffic restrictions until this investigation is completed:

Wye Road and Sherwood Drive

Fir Street and Sherwood Drive

It is anticipated that this will continue for many hours. An update will be provided when more information is available.
