Strathcona County RCMP Urge Motorists To Move Right

Strathcona County, Alta. – At any given moment, you or a loved one may need the assistance of police, fire or ambulance, yet there has been a noted difference by emergency services departments in the way motorists are reacting to an approaching emergency vehicle.

Under the Use of Highway and Rules of the Roads Regulations, when an emergency vehicle that is over taking, approaching or meeting another vehicle, the driver of that vehicle shall move to a position that is as close as practicable to the right curb or right edge of the roadway and stop and remain stopped in that position until the emergency vehicle has passed.

“Drivers have been moving left or completely freezing on the spot. This is causing dangerous circumstances for all vehicles in the immediate area” advises Constable Allison Gyonyor “mere seconds can make the difference between life and death.”  For all users of the road, it is imperative that all drivers make every effort possible to move right and stop.
