Strathcona County RCMP are reminding home owners to protect their property
Strathcona County, Alta. – Strathcona County RCMP are reminding homeowners to protect their property and remove garage door openers from vehicles.
“We’ve had two recent reports where a criminal gained entry to a vehicle parked outside and then used the garage door opener to enter the garage and steal items from the property,” says Cst. Cheri-Lee Smith, Strathcona County Community Policing Unit.
Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always keep your doors locked when you are not in the vehicle, especially if it is running.
- Never leave your keys in your vehicle.
- Be sure to remove all valuables, and store purchases in your trunk until you get home.
- Use a steering wheel club.
- Always keep your garage locked, as well as the door between the garage and the house
- Do not store your garage door opener in your vehicle.
- Whenever possible, park in a well-lit area.
- Consider installing a vehicle tracking system.
RCMP encourage everyone to report all crime to police, by phone, in person, or using the RCMP app when applicable. Reports tell us where to look, who to look for, and where additional patrols may be required.
